Leaky Gutter

According to this media release, the Victorian Building Authority (which is now part of the Building and Plumbing Commission) frequently reminds homeowners and renters to regularly clean gutters, such as non-compliant box guttering.

A leaking gutter leads to mould growth, water damage, and unwanted repairs, so it’s not something you want to leave without a repair for too long. Leaking gutters also cause structural issues such as wood rot and foundation cracks. It’s not a fun time.

Thankfully, many leaky gutter repairs aren’t overly complicated and can be handled with a bit of DIY care.

This blog will break down why your gutters are leaking, repair methods, and how to keep them maintained.

Why Do Gutters Leak?

Gutters Leak

Gutters direct rainwater away from your property, protecting its foundation. This foundation is expensive to repair if your gutters are leaking, so it’s best to repair your gutters as soon as possible. What are some of the reasons behind gutter leaks?

The gutter joints themselves are leaking. Sealant that holds gutters' joints together can weaken over time. Through this constant expansion, contraction and temperature changes (as well as general wear and tear), the sealant cracks and lets water get through.

The gutters and downpipes are clogged. Debris, leaves and dirt can clog gutters, forcing water flow to overflow and get through weak points to leak through. Clogs also cause water to stagnate and corrode the metal.

The gutters are rusted or corroded. Are your gutters not sloped correctly? Water can pool instead of flowing towards the downspout. Additionally, loose brackets or screws can pull gutters out of alignment, which causes leaks at the weak points.

The gutters are sagging. Inadequate gutter support or the weight of debris and water accumulation makes them leak. If you don’t address it, gutters might detach from the house and damage your fascia!

The last repair attempt went wrong. Your roofing contractor may have used an unsuitable sealant for the job.

What should you do before attempting any repair work?

  • Remove debris or leaves from the gutter system. Use a gutter scoop or gloves to remove any build-up of twigs, leaves, or other obstructions.
  • Examine the downpipes for any blockages or clogs. Dislodge and remove trapped debris by inserting a plumber’s snake or using a high-pressure hose. In a severe case, manual removal may be necessary.
  • Install gutter protection, such as gutter guards, to stop further debris from entering. Gutter guards help water to flow while keeping leaves and debris out! To choose the best type for your roof, think about gutter brushes, mesh screens, or foam inserts.
  • Assess the slope of your gutter system; it needs to flow towards the downpipes. They should have a slight downward slope for efficient drainage. If you’re unsure, use a level to check that they’re aligned.

How Do You Fix a Leaking Gutter? A Quick Guide

Leaking Gutter

Here’s a step-by-step guide to fixing your leaky gutters!

1. Seal any leaking joints

You can repair any leaking gutter joints by resealing them, but how do you go about it?

  • Clean the leaking joint by removing the old sealant, debris and dirt using soapy water and a wire brush.
  • Let the area completely dry before applying a brand-new waterproof sealant.
  • Generously apply the sealant along the joint and smooth it out. Make sure to wear gloves during this process.
  • Allow the sealant to cure for at least 24 hours before testing it with water.

2. Patch small holes

The issue might not be with the joints! There could be small holes in the gutter. Fix them with this simple patching method:

  • Identify the small cracks or holes in your gutter.
  • Clean around the hole with a mild cleaning solution and a cloth.
  • Cut a piece of gutter repair tape slightly larger than the hole.
  • Firmly press the tape over the hole to ensure a tight seal. Lay it flat without stretching so it overlaps across the leak.
  • Brush on the sealant so the seam tape edges are covered.
  • Wait 4-6 hours or until the sealer is tacky (but not wet!).
  • Apply another layer of sealant, extending it slightly beyond the first coat’s edges.
  • While the sealant is wet, remove the painter’s tape.
  • Now, test by pouring water through the gutter to check that no leaks are left!

Depending on the size of the repair, it might take days for the sealant to cure.

3. Replace any rusted sections

Although repair tape works well for minor holes or cracks, rusted (or heavily damaged) sections must be replaced for the gutter system to work properly.

  • Use a hacksaw or tin snips to remove the damaged section.
  • Cut a replacement piece of the gutter to size.
  • Securely attach it using screws and a waterproof sealant.
  • Paint over any exposed metal to prevent rust from happening.

4. Secure loose gutters

Once your gutters don’t have rust or damage anymore, they need to be secured and angled for water flow. This includes adjusting the slope.

  • Is the gutter properly sloped towards the downspout?
  • Is water pooling? If so, make sure to reposition the gutter brackets slightly lower at one end.
  • Tighten any screws or install new ones if you have to.
  • Test the gutter by pouring water into it and double-check the water flow.

Rubber Waterproof Sealer

For best results, choose a day with temperatures above 5 °C and no direct sunlight. Avoid a rainy forecast and aim to finish the repair early if dew is expected the next day. For minor repairs, smaller sizes of seam tape and sealant are available.

Even after using a rubber waterproof sealer, it is wise to inspect the repair area each season. While the repaired spot might remain sealed, adjacent areas might need attention. To fortify your gutter system, coat its interior with the sealant to prevent potential leaks.

Why should you choose a liquid rubber waterproof sealant anyway? It offers an affordable, user-friendly solution for gutter leaks, and is non-toxic, solvent-free, and safe for households with pets and children.

So, how do you prevent gutter leaks in the first place?

It is recommended to clean your gutters at least twice a year, or ideally, maintain them seasonally. Frequency really depends on where you’re located and the climate. For example, you might require more cleaning if you have overhanging trees or experience heavy rainfall.
